Kunio Katou's "La Maison en Petits Cubes"

Everything about this film is beautiful.

Kunio Katou's "La Maison en Petits Cubes" (House of Small Cubes) tells the tale of an aged widower who reflects on his past memories and experiences. Growing old and alone, he is forced to add block upon block to his house to escape the floods in his town. Accidentally dropping his favourite smoking pipe into the lower submerged levels of his home, his search for the pipe leads him to relive those long distant memories.

The film won the Annecy Cristal and the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2008 and the Best Animated Short Film at the 81st Annual Academy Awards in 2009.
